What is Same Day Voter Registration? (A925/S1193)

Same-Day Voter Registration will promote democracy in New Jersey by making it easy to register to vote and cast a ballot in a single day.

It will allow voters to register to vote at polling places during early voting and on election days. Same-Day Voter registrants must provide identification & residency info and can cast a provisional ballot. Their provisional ballot will be counted once their information is verified.

A925/S1193, introduced in the NJ Assembly and Senate, will finally bring Same-Day Voter Registration to New Jersey. This bill is supported by a wide range of legislators.

Benefits of Same-Day Voter Registration in New Jersey

Benefits of Same-Day Voter Registration

Same-Day Voter Registration allows voters to update their information (like a change of address), helping to improve the accuracy of our voter rolls. It increases voter turnout (5% average, 10% for young voters, 2-17% for Black & Latinx voters) and helps bridge the voter registration gap and protect people of color from being disproportionately disenfranchised on Election Day.

Increases Voter Turnout

Same-Day Voter Registration makes voting easier and increases voter turnout! Studies have shown that states with Same-Day Voter Registration experience:

  • An average 5% increase in voter turnout.

  • As much as a 10 percentage point increase among 18 to 24-year-olds.

  • Up to 2-17% voter increase for Black and Latinx voters.

Protects people of color from disenfranchisement

Census data shows people of color make up over 48% of NJ residents - almost half! People of color are purged from voter rolls at higher rates than white voters, partly because they move more frequently.

Same-Day Voter Registration will bridge the voter registration gap.

More accurate voter rolls

Same-Day Voter Registration is an effective way to remedy inaccurate voting rolls. As we have seen in past elections, voters are disenfranchised because of errors or outdated records, causing them not to receive their mail-in ballots and to be turned away from the polls. Same-Day Voter Registration allows voters to securely fix these errors at the polls and cast a ballot on Election Day.
